MDOT Type A Crushed Gravel

ME DOT Standard Spec § 703.07 — Base Course

Maine DOT Type A gravel is a mechanically crushed, well-graded base course aggregate meeting the gradation requirements of ME DOT Standard Specifications for Highways and Bridges, Section 703.07. The 1-1/2" maximum nominal size, angular fracture, and controlled fines content (passing No. 200 sieve) produce a tightly interlocked matrix with high bearing capacity under dynamic traffic loading.

Gradation (% Passing by Weight)

Sieve Size% Passing
2"100%
1-1/2"95–100%
1"70–100%
No. 4 (4.75mm)40–70%
No. 200 (0.075mm)3–10%

Standard Applications

  • Flexible pavement base course (DOT highways, municipal roads)
  • Aggregate subbase beneath rigid and flexible pavements
  • Structural fill for embankment construction
  • Parking lot and commercial drive base course
MDOT Certified CSI 31 23 23

MDOT Type B Crushed Gravel

ME DOT Standard Spec § 703.07 — Subbase / Fill

MDOT Type B is a coarser, open-graded crushed gravel with a 4" maximum particle size. Its lower fines content relative to Type A allows for greater drainage capacity while still providing adequate load distribution for subbase and non-paved structural applications. Widely used in highway subbase construction and DOT-specified shoulder aggregate work across Maine.

Gradation (% Passing by Weight)

2"75–100%
1"55–85%
No. 4 (4.75mm)25–55%
No. 200 (0.075mm)3–10%

Standard Applications

  • Highway and roadway subbase construction
  • DOT shoulder aggregate and road widening
  • Engineered structural fill (CSI 31 23 23.13)
  • Site stabilization beneath paved surfaces
CSI 33 05 17

3/4" Crushed Stone

Clean — Zero Fines

Single-size, clean crushed stone with 100% mechanically fractured faces and essentially zero fines (less than 1% passing No. 200). The open void structure — approximately 40% air voids by volume — provides unrestricted lateral drainage, making this the standard material for perforated underdrain systems, pipe bedding, and infiltration trenches per — specification. Also used as concrete coarse aggregate where clean, angular stone is required.

1"100%
3/4"95–100%
1/2"25–60%
3/8"0–10%
No. 4 (4.75mm)0–5%

Standard Applications

  • Utility trench pipe bedding and backfill (CSI 33 05 17)
  • Concrete coarse aggregate (CSI 03 31 00)
  • Foundation wall drainage aggregate
  • French drain and infiltration trench fill
CSI 33 46 13

1-1/2" Crushed Stone

Clean — Zero Fines

Coarse, clean angular stone meeting — gradation. The large, uniform particle size creates a high-void matrix (approximately 45% air voids) providing maximum drainage flow capacity. Specified by Maine DEP for septic system leach field aggregate and by civil engineers for underdrain blankets in subsurface drainage design. The angular fracture pattern interlocks to resist displacement under loading.

2-1/2"100%
2"90–100%
1-1/2"35–70%
3/4"0–15%

Standard Applications

  • Septic system leach field aggregate (Maine DEP)
  • Underdrain and subsurface drainage blanket (CSI 33 46 13)
  • Stormwater infiltration bed aggregate (CSI 33 40 00)
  • Retaining wall drainage aggregate

1-1/2" Crushed Gravel

Nominal Size — With Fines

A versatile all-purpose crushed gravel with 1-1/2" nominal maximum size and controlled fines content. The blended gradation provides both drainage capacity and compactability, making it suitable for residential and commercial driveway base courses, haul roads, and general site subbase. Commonly specified for unpaved access road construction on commercial sites.

Standard Applications

  • Residential and commercial driveway base course
  • Unpaved haul road and access road construction
  • Parking area base and sub-base
  • General site fill and grading
Heavy Earthwork CSI 31 23 23

4" Crushed Gravel

Nominal Size — Coarse Fill

The coarsest gradation in our gravel inventory, with 4" maximum particle size. The angular, oversized particles interlock to create a mechanically stable mass under heavy static and dynamic loading. Used as a first-lift fill material in deep embankment construction, bog bridging, and weak subgrade stabilization where standard gravel cannot bridge soft ground conditions.

Standard Applications

  • Deep embankment first-lift fill (CSI 31 23 23)
  • Soft subgrade and bog bridging
  • Heavy industrial site stabilization
  • Stream crossing and culvert approach fill
